What is Udyam Registration?
Udyam registration is free and takes 10 minutes, but 70% of eligible Delhi businesses have not done it. Udyam is the government registration for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) under the MSME Development Act 2006. It replaced the old Udyog Aadhaar system from 1st July 2020.
Official Reference: The MSME Development Act 2006 governs MSME classification and benefits. The Government of India notification dated 26th June 2020 introduced new classification criteria based on investment AND turnover. Rule 8 of Udyam Registration Rules 2020 provides the registration procedure.
MSME Classification -- New Criteria
| Category | Investment in Plant & Equipment | Annual Turnover |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | Up to ₹1 crore | Up to ₹5 crore |
| Small | Up to ₹10 crore | Up to ₹50 crore |
| Medium | Up to ₹50 crore | Up to ₹250 crore |
📍 Real Example -- Gandhi Nagar Garment Unit
A garment manufacturer in Gandhi Nagar with ₹4 crore investment in machinery and ₹30 crore annual turnover qualifies as a Small Enterprise (investment below ₹10 crore AND turnover below ₹50 crore). This makes them eligible for priority lending, interest subsidy, and government tender preference.
Benefits of Udyam Registration
- Priority lending from banks -- up to 20% above base rate
- Interest subsidy on loans -- 2% for micro, 1% for small enterprises
- Protection against delayed payments -- buyer must pay within 45 days, else 3x bank rate interest
- Preference in government tenders -- mandatory 25% procurement from MSMEs
- Credit Guarantee Fund Scheme -- collateral-free loans up to ₹2 crore
- Subsidy for ISO certification -- 75% of certification cost reimbursed
- ZED certification subsidy -- for quality improvement
- Technology upgradation support -- under CLCSS scheme
📍 Real Example -- Delayed Payment Recovery -- Maya Puri Supplier
A MSME-registered supplier in Maya Puri supplied ₹20 lakh of goods to a large company. After 45 days, payment was still pending. Under Section 15 of the MSMED Act, the buyer must pay compound interest at 3x the bank rate for the delay period. At 18% (3x 6% bank rate), the interest for a 90-day delay was ₹88,767. The buyer paid immediately after receiving the legal notice citing MSME protection.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Udyam registration mandatory?
It is not legally mandatory, but it is essential to access MSME benefits like priority lending, interest subsidy, payment protection, and government tenders. Without Udyam, you are invisible to the MSME support system.
Can a trading business get Udyam registration?
Yes. Earlier, trading businesses were excluded from MSME benefits. But since the new classification (2020), both manufacturing and service/trading enterprises can register. The investment and turnover criteria are the same.
What happens if my turnover exceeds the MSME limit?
You must update your Udyam registration with the new figures. If you cross the Medium threshold (₹250 crore turnover or ₹50 crore investment), your MSME status lapses and you lose MSME benefits. However, existing benefits already availed continue.
